1] What is a sweetener? A sweetener can be sugar or non-sugar based, and is used to improve the taste and sometimes the feel of a liquid or chewable solid dosage form. Sweeteners are also used extensively in the formulation of foods and confections.  
 
2) Reasons for using sweeteners include:
Taste   To change the flavor, or mouth feel of a liquid
To improve the flavor of a chewable solid
