1] Plasticizers Description: Plasticizers come in a wide variety of solubility and functional properties. In general their use is to reduce the glass transition temperature of a polymer making it more elastic, and deformable (flexible). |

| Plas II®
|
A Blend of plasticizers used in acrylic emulsion coatings, composed of: Glyceryl Monostearate, Polysorbate 80, triethylcitrate, Methyl Parabens and Propyl Parabens. Contains a slip agent which greatly reduces the tackiness of acrylic emulsion coatings. |
| Citrate Esters |
Triethyl citrate (TEC) most water soluble (5.5 g/100ml)
Acetyltriethyl Citrate (ATEC) slightly soluble in water (0.72 g/100ml)
Acetyltri-n-butyl Citrate (ATBC) water insoluble

| Plasticizer |
Plas II is compatible with most acrylic emulsion coating formulations. Used at a ratio of approximately 15 acrylic emulsion solids to one Plas II solid. |
| Citrate Esters: used as plasticizers for aqueous based coatings. Both hydrophilic and lipophilic esters are available, which can be used to vary film properties and release rates. Very effective in retarding drug release in acid media, making them a good choice for enteric coatings. Film permeability and drug release rate is highest with low molecular weight citrates (e.g. TEC and ATEC) used at high concentration. Higher molecular weight citrates (ATBC) used at low concentrations provide lower permeability and slow drug release. Used at a level of 10 to 40% by weight of dry solids. Effective in both aqueous and solvent based coating systems. |
